THE CORAL OASIS

About Us

I am Frank Burr, the creator of The Coral Oasis (Farm) and the proprietor of Tropical Reef Oasis (Retail Store). I started my first reef tank in 1983 by constructing a wet/dry filter/sump from an article in FAMA. and have been addicted ever since. In those early days I spent a bit over 3 years perfecting my methods in a sixty gallon long tank. I learned a lot from trial and error, there was not much literature available on reef tanks at that time. At the time I was working as a saltwater department manager at a local pet store. I was excited to employ all of the techniques I was learning from the wholesalers and customers

In the last 22 years, I have had a variety of reef systems under my care, both my own and customer systems.

In 2000, I started a reef maintenance business - Tropical Reef Oasis - which has since been expanded to a full Reef Only retail store. Around that time a friend - Steve Garrett (garretts-acropolis.com) got me started on SPS corals and that new addiction has been expanded greatly, in 2005 I started doing Coral Road Trips, initially with Steve Tyree, scouring the country for new and exiting stony corals for propagation. In the course of the road trips, I have found many exotic and rare corals which I have been fortunate enough to obtain for The Coral Oasis.

Currently I am adding 1~2 new Limited Edition corals to the selection per month as time and discoveries of new corals allows, the road trips will continue to all areas of the country throughout 2006 as the search continues for new rare corals.

The Coral Oasis propagation facility consists of 4 separate and isolated Tower Propagation systems for SPS corals as well as 4 soft and 2 LPS propagation systems also. We have several quarantine systems setup to process incoming livestock, 3 SPS QT, 1 LPS, 1 soft coral and 2 fish QT tanks. Also we have a 180 gallon SPS sale/growout system at the Tropical Reef Oasis retail store location. My 80 gallon home system supported hundreds of propagation's, but the demand and my desire to expand the depth of the operation led me to eventually expand the system and added on for a small scale coral farm. In the early days I propagated only soft and LPS corals. These were merely stop gaps until I could get the new facility underway which ended up taking a bit over two years. Five times the amount I had originally intended. Although the process has been slow and at some points so aggravating I wanted to give up it is starting to come around. My aim is to share propagated species to lessen the strain on our natural resources, as well as share my experiences with the reef community.

Thank you
Frank Burr
